I’m An Aunt…I Think

Aspen | Dachshunds,Dog Breeds,My Pet Friends,Other Pets | Wednesday, 06 January 2010

Do you see this little Dachshund? (We did a page about Dachshunds if you’re interested…click here or look in the pages list.) I did last night…for the first time. One of the people who used to live here, and went away and got married, came to visit. I was really excited because I miss Heather, but guess what, when she and her husband walked in the door, they were holding this. The little puppy in the picture.

First, this is my “turf” so I wasn’t all excited about having another little dog come and visit, second, Heather now has another dog in her life…first a man comes along and marries her so she doesn’t live here anymore, then they decide to get this little dog. Yes, I’m jealous.

I heard Heather trying to figure out how I was related to the dog…she said that I was her sister. I can’t understand that one since I’m a dog and she’s a human, but I guess it’s because I’m like one of the owner’s children. (Humans really do think strangely). So she figures that I’m her dogs Aunt.

I don’t know whether I’m an Aunt or not, but do know that I have a LOT of adjusting to do.

P.S.  If you want to know where they got this puppy, I can ask, the breeders have a nice website.

My Dog Neighbors Were Lost in a Fire

Aspen | Dog Stories,My Pet Friends,Other Pets | Tuesday, 18 August 2009

Last night was a sad night in our neighborhood.  It all started just after it got dark, we saw flashing lights, and looked out the window.  Across the street there was a police car and some smoke.  Before we knew it there were fire trucks and fire men all over.  No one was home…except the dogs, one a large labrador retreiver and the other a sweet grey pit bull that we’ve been watching grow up for the past few months.

The neighbors that owned the dogs were out at the time, and drove in behind a fire engine knowing that someones house was on fire, but didn’t know it was theirs.  A neighbor stopped their car before it got up the street to warn them that it was their home.

It was so sad to watch the mother, daughter and her boyfriend as they wanted so much to get into the house to get the dogs, the firemen had to hold them back, and they just hugged and cried.  Moments later the house burst into flames that lept up into the trees, and the firemen had to get the fire under control.  It was a small cabin, so the damage was extensive.

Sadly, the two precious dogs were found later in the evening during the cleanup.  We heard that the firemen said that they were able to find the source of the fire because the young dog’s little body was faced right towards it.  Oh, it hurts to even tell the story, we are all so very sad about the whole thing, even though we’re happy that no people were in the house.

Neighbors have been giving and helping all day, and there is a little cross with flowers for both of the dogs out in front of the house, that is now all boarded up, no one can live in it now.

I don’t know that there is anything that anyone could have done to save the dogs or prevent this, it was just one of those things, and we are all mourning the loss, but no one more than the young woman and her boyfriend who were always out in the yard with their dog, training it and playing with it.

So give your dogs and extra hug tonight, and think about how safe your home is when you leave your dog alone in the house.

Chihuahua Mix and Poodle Rescue Friends

Today I want to share with you a story about two little dogs that belong(ed) to a friend of mine. She shared it in an email a long while ago, and I just stumbled on it, and thought you’d like it, as it shows how two dogs can learn to get along. After I post it, we’ll track our friend down and have her come read it and update on the latest news about these two little furbabies in a comment…it picks up a bit into the story about her adopted Chihuahua mix, Zeena. Enjoy!

We only know for sure that Zeena’s mom is a Chihuahua. (Dad is from a nice neighborhood.) The vet is convinced that her dad is a dachshund, because of her growing features, but we are not really sure. The vet said we could do DNA testing to find out, but I really don’t care. She’s my fur baby and she’s a doll! When I got her at 3 weeks old, she was less than a pound and looked just like a Chihuahua puppy. As she grew she changed a lot. Now, she is 5.5 lbs., completely healthy and loves everyone she comes into contact with. Very smart and very active!

Bernie, (Bernadette) my toy poodle has been with me for 3 years. She was rescued from an abusive home where apparently the young man or teen living in the home kicked her down a long flight of stairs. That was when they took her away—who knows what kind of stuff happened behind closed doors. Bernie has always shied away from men, but she knew she had me tied around her front paws the minute I held her. She needed a lot of medical care for ear infections, bad teeth and is almost toothless now. I wanted to breed her at first, but the vet said she was too old and had her spayed instead. She is not a very bright dog, but she and I are bonded and I take very good care of her, so no one can ever hurt her again. We think she is around 8 years old, but are not sure. She is very loyal to me.

When I brought Zeena into our family, Bernie wasn’t sure what to do about her. I knew she was jealous of Zeena, because I kept her near me, or carried her around most of the day when she was a baby. She had to be bottle fed every 2-3 hrs. the first week. I think Bernie thought she was a squeaky toy—I didn’t notice any mothering instinct at all! I kept them separated for the first two months, except when I was right there to help Zeena.

Now that Zeena is older, the two of them play all day long and only get mad at each other when I pay more attention to one and not the other. Bernie is not lonely when I have to leave for the day and Zeena is just non-stop fun! Geeze, I could write all day about their antics, but I have to stop for now. I like the idea of Aspen’s blog and was thinking about maybe doing one for my babies—they give me so much enjoyment! (Teri, if you still have your fur-babies, doing a blog about them is a bright spot in the middle of whatever life brings your way…luv, Aspen)

Scottish Terrier Barney, the White House Dog

Aspen | Dog Sites,My Pet Friends,Other Pets,Other Sites,White House Dogs | Tuesday, 11 November 2008

After doing a post about something Barney did that wasn’t very nice, I decided I should follow up with something nice, because after all, Barney is a cute dog, and a lot of fun.  My owner is of Scottish heritage, I always wonder why she has me, a Yorkshire Terrier instead of a Scottish Terrier, but am happy she does.

Anyway, back to Barney, early on in President Bush’s presidency, before people and press decided to go negative, Barney’s Christmas videos were popular.  I think they are still very good.  I hope to post a few of them here for you, as we remember that this is going to be Barney’s last Christmas in the White House.

First, a link to the OFFICIAL Barney page at whitehouse.gov.

And here’s a few videos for you from years gone by:

Well there you are, hope you enjoy…and don’t be fooled by “Barney Cam” videos that aren’t the official “Barney Cams”, or any websites other than whitehouse.ORG, please!

Barney, the White House Pooch Bites Reporter

Aspen | My Pet Friends,Other Pets | Thursday, 06 November 2008

What a surprise to hear that one of my favorite doggie friends, Barney, President Bush’ Scottish Terrier decided to nip at FOX News correspondent John Decker’s finger today.

Apparently as Decker was walking to the White House briefing room, he reached down to pet Barney on the White House lawn, and Barney gave him a little nip on his right index finger and even drew a little blood.

I don’t know why Barney would do such a thing, maybe he’s not happy about having to leave behind life at the White House.  Maybe he’s more of a White House dog than a ranch dog.  But I think that maybe, just maybe Mr. Decker didn’t remember that when you are reaching down to pet a dog, that it’s best not to do it suddenly, but to first hold your hand out for the dog to sniff, and so you can get a feel for whether or not the dog is going to be friendly or not.

I still like Barney, I’m going to give him a break because I would feel a little grumpy too if people talked about my owners like some of the news media people do, and if I knew I was going to have to leave my spoiled life at the White House soon.
